Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine trend of the gender and age specific death rate of intentional self-harm in Korea 2003-2011. The analysis was based on data of intentional self-harm deaths from the 2003 (10,392 deaths) and 2011 (15,942 deaths) vital statistics of Korea. Methods: The common methods in 2003 were poisoning (40.8 percent), hanging (33.9 percent), and jumping (15.6 percent). In 2011, hanging (52.4 percent) has surpassed poisoning (27.6 percent) as the most often used method. The preferred suicide methods were hanging and poisoning by gas (X67) and pesticides (X68) in Korea. Results: Through 2003-2011, the suicide rate (per 100,000 population) increased from 35.9 to 47.3 in male and increased from 16.0 to 21.9 in female. Gender ratio (male / female) of suicide rate decreased from 2.24 in 2003 to 2.16 in 2011. During the period, gender ratio increased in poisoning (from 1.19 to 2.47), in drowning (from 1.43 to 2.0), and decreased from 3.36 to 2.36 in hanging. Age specific suicide rate increased with advanced age in both gender. In 2003-2011, a prominent increase in suicide rate occurred among those aged 20-39 years old (1.32-1.48 times in male, and 1.59-1.77 times in female). Age specific suicide rate of hanging in female increased by 7.5 times in aged 60-69 years old and increased by 3.07-3.94 times in aged 20-59 years old. All age suicide rates of hanging increased in both gender. there was decline in age specific rate of poisoning in both gender. Conclusion: There was a decline in rates of poisoning in both gender and drowning among female, but an increase in hanging by both gender during the period.
